Tao Yiqiu was born into a wealthy landowning family in Xiajiaqiao Town (now known as the Xiaqiao Community of Lujia Town) of Kunshan. In his early years, he had done many beneficial things for his hometown. In 1939, he founded the first counter-Japanese armed force in Kunshan and sold his own land to support the resistance. In appreciation of Tao Yiqiu’s deeds and contributions, a memorial hall was built in his honor in Lujia Town, Kunshan. In 2020, since there would be an underground line to be built nearby, the memorial hall was planned to be relocated to Xiaqiao Community, Tao Yiqiu’s birthplace. Continue reading Atelier Deshaus

The Upper-Cloister in Jinshan Mountain is not an ancient temple, but the ancient Great Wall as far as the eye can see is an unprecedented miracle. The establishment of the upper-cloister has set a new point-in-time for the valley.

A light meditation hall (Aranya) touches the ground on tiptoe, as its slim and light structure sets the distance in time between the new construction and the ancient Great Wall, and the valley has also been relocated in time due to the human construction. From the upper entrance courtyard to the lower open meditation hall, the upper cloister itself also strives to establish an internal time through atmosphere and the opening and closing of space. The new construction not only communicates with the ancient Great Wall in time and space, but also fits into the topography and wilderness of the valley. Continue reading Atelier Deshaus

But with a strategic design layout, the east and west blocks are both centralized and independent in the sense of functions, while interconnected as an entity with an elevated walkway. Meanwhile, the entrance to the playground area is placed along the community pathway, which enables part of the school facilities to be shared by the community. Continue reading Atelier Deshaus

The site of the Riverside Passage was previously used as a coal-unloading wharf for transport connected to the old Yangpu Gas Plant. A reinforced concrete wall, which is 90 meters long and 4 meters high, was built to prevent coal from falling down into the river. After the coal wharf was deserted, this long wall became abandoned and fell into solitude. There were originally two walls on the wharf. The one along the river had been removed long ago and filled in the gap between the wharf and the flood control wall. Continue reading Atelier Deshaus
