The Bacalar Lagoon, home to the world’s largest freshwater bacterial reef, faces threats from urbanization and human activity. The project’s main strategy is to minimize the impact of human activity by reducing the program, acting with precision, and treading lightly on the rich flora and fauna. The centerpiece is an 800-meter pier with varying heights to avoid disturbing the mangroves and serve as a platform for visitors to glide over the lagoon. The landscape strategy mitigates water pollution through natural filters, rain gardens, and the rehabilitation of degraded mangroves, while a museum exhibit raises awareness of the area’s unique biodiversity.

La Laguna de Bacalar es el arrecife bacteriano de agua dulce más grande del mundo. Es uno de los pocos lugares donde existen estromatolitos vivos, tesoro evolutivo invaluable. La estrategia principal del proyecto fue reducir al mínimo el programa solicitado y actuar con agudeza para poder deambular por la riqueza natural de la flora y fauna del sitio, afectando lo menos posible. Se construyó un muelle cuadrado de 200 m por lado, orientado al norte y con altura variable para no tocar al mangle ni a los árboles, y deslizarse rozante a la laguna. Se generó un sistema estructural eficiente, construido con madera local y certificada de chicozapote, encontrando la justa medida para ser columna, trabe y cimiento al mismo tiempo.
