The Bacalar Lagoon, home to the world’s largest freshwater bacterial reef, faces threats from urbanization and human activity. The project’s main strategy is to minimize the impact of human activity by reducing the program, acting with precision, and treading lightly on the rich flora and fauna. The centerpiece is an 800-meter pier with varying heights to avoid disturbing the mangroves and serve as a platform for visitors to glide over the lagoon. The landscape strategy mitigates water pollution through natural filters, rain gardens, and the rehabilitation of degraded mangroves, while a museum exhibit raises awareness of the area’s unique biodiversity. Tapachula Railway Station was inaugurated at the beginning of the 20th Century; with an eclectic and art deco appearance that by the seventies would become modernist. In October 2005, Hurricane “Stan” collapsed the rail system in several sections, making it impossible for the train to function. Given the magnitude of the disaster it proved unfeasible to rebuild. The place that long served as the gateway to Mexico, as well as the heart of Tapachula, gave rise to a garbage dump; at night, housing homeless people. Continue reading Colectivo C733
